Architecture
This 11-storey triangular building was designed by Bradford Gilbert and is a fine example of Chicago style urban architecture. Built in 1897, this is the oldest steel-framed high rise in the city.
The Atlanta Flatiron Building is credited for influencing the design of many skyscrapers that were developed in Atlanta over the following two decades. The buildings name is derived from its narrow shape and a base that is supported by half columns separated by vast windows.
The steel frame is enclosed at the base in heavy limestone piers and the stone in the upper stories provides a beautiful sculptural form for the entire building. The base floor is equivalent to two stories in height with large glass areas separated by stone piers. The two upper floors are above a heavy cornice and a parapet at the cap of the building.
